The Telco Dig

This painting provides a glimpse of Shermerhorn Row, one of the earliest commercial developments in New York. Built by Peter Shermerhorn in 1811 and 1812, these warehouses stored cargo for the vessels that docked at the adjacent seaport. The foreground of the painting documents the archaeological excavation that was required before construction of the new office building could take place, and many of the people in the painting are archaeologists.
